I met Reed in 1985 and we spent the next 24 years enjoying life together fishing, flying airplanes, helicopters, gyrocopters, hiking and basically enjoying whatever life had to offer.
In 2009, at the age of 54 and at the peak of his physical health, he went to his doctor for physical and had his first PSA Screening (he did not have any symptoms). His number was elevated. Several months later after taking antibiotics and PSA Screenings that continued to show an increased number, he had a biopsy and he was told he prostate cancer(He had not family history that we knew of.)
We spent the next 3 months researching and meeting with doctors all over the country to see which treatment we would use. (It is up to you which treatment you will use.) We finally decided to go with Proton Beam Therapy. After two months of treatment his tests showed he was clear of PC.
Ten months later he had pain in his back. After a CT scan, it showed that the PC had metastasized to his bones. We spent the next three years doing everything we could to keep it at bay. There were drugs, diets, exercise and of course, Reed was flying and doing things he wanted to do. We bought a motor home and took drives to Sebastian for fishing every month, he bought a turbine helicopter and we built an MTO Sport Gyro copter in September 2013. Unfortunately, he only flew it 12 hours.
Reed became very ill in December 2013 as the cancer had spread to his spine and woke up one day paralyzed from tumor taking over. During the next 5 months, he still fought the fight to stay positive and "active". He even flew his MTO sport twice during these months. He would have a friend in the backseat that maneuvered the foot controlled rudder.
On May 22nd, 2014, I lost my everything. He was 59. I was prepared for his passing but yet not prepared for the feeling of loss of the energy and brightness he gave everyday to all those that loved him.
He is flying high and fast.
HAD HE DONE HIS SCREENING AT 45 HE WOULD BE HERE TODAY BY MY SIDE - FISHING, FLYING, HIKING, BIKING, COOKING, KITE BOARDING AND ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ELSE HE LOVED TO DO?
I founded Anglers For The Cure so no other man would ever have to experience that nightmare if possible. Our mission is to provide Research and Awareness of Prostate Cancer for All MANKIND! We’re out to educate men in their 30s, 40s and 50s about the importance of early PSA screening. Prostate Cancer does not discriminate, it can affect many men long, long before their “Golden Years…”
